Location: Sporting Event or Physical Fitness Activity Site
Activities: Could include attending sporting events, participating in local 5Ks, hiking local trails, riding bikes, playing basketball or just going for a walk.
How better to Defend Potential and Create Possibilities than to help a child or youth (Little), ages 6 through graduation, strive for better health and wellbeing? In the Sports Buddies Program, adult mentors (Bigs) and Littles meet 1-2 times per month to attend a sporting event or participate in a physical fitness activity. Bigs model good sportsmanship and physical fitness, while providing opportunities for Littles to experience new sporting events and activities. The Sports Buddies Program is sports- and physical fitness-focused and teaches life skills, goal setting, character, and sportsmanship. Both men and women can participate in the Sports Buddies Program.
Bigs are asked to make at least a one-year commitment in the program but we’re hopeful they’ll continue until their Little turns 18 or graduates from high school, whichever is the latter. Many of matches result in a lifelong friendship.
A professional staff person supports the match and has regular contact with the Big, Little and his/her parent/guardian to offer advice and support, encourage focus on the match goals, and to ensure the Little’s safety is always paramount.
